World of Warcraft - Item Upgrading
Item upgrading allows players to increase the gear score of an item to 700 and add an additional perk. Items can be upgraded if they're in your inventory and you decide to take them to the kiln.
Certain items can be upp'd to benefit from their unique stats (like perfect made breakpoint armour that can be rolled to use in melee PvP) and others, like weapons, do not vary greatly post upgrade, so they aren't worth upgrading.
Weapons
Upgrades to weapons can boost their numerical stats, like attack damage, crit chance and PvE/PvP damage. Weapons have a flat-rate bonus that increases damage per second. Some weapons also have an unaffected bonus that is activated when three or more identical weapons are used in a unit. This bonus can sometimes be greater than the damage that a weapon upgrade can do on its own.
The cost of upgrading a weapon varies on its rarity and level. For example, a +2 weapon will require two regular Smithing Stones to upgrade while an upgrade of +3 requires four. The number of stones required to upgrade the weapon will continue to increase until it requires an upgrade to a higher level of Smithing Stones, at which point it will reset to one.
Upgraded weapons can also alter their base stats. While this is generally beneficial, it can have some negative consequences as well. For items that only see use in a certain build (Whistant's shield for FB sorcs, for instance) upgrading them could render them useless unless you get a lucky roll.
It is possible to upgrade armor items to improve their performance. For example, if you upgrade a helm or chest, it will boost its defense base while a belt and gloves will increase their strength and dexterity. Armor also has an option to reroll its Enhanced Defense%, meaning that it can sometimes roll back to a lower number.
The upgrade template for a weapon displays the new stats that it will gain when upgraded and their relative values. This means that a change from a sword with 8 damage to an 11-attack-damage sword will result in a weapon receiving an attack damage of 3. The 3% doesn't mean that the weapon will strike 3 times less, as it is an absolute number.
Rerolling a weapon is possible by pressing the green button within the item menu, using the circling arrows. The item will be rerolled and change its statistics, but not reset the weapon's levels, or bind it to account status.
Armor
A few armor upgrades can make the world of difference to your survival. Certain sets provide massive boosts to poison, curse, fire and magic resistance, making the journey through difficult terrain a breeze. The more defense your character has, the more value you get from each point of health and it's crucial to improve your armor as much as possible.
You can upgrade your armor by visiting any of the Great Fairy Fountains. There are four Great Fairy Fountains available in the game, and to unlock them all, you must complete an additional quest that involves the Stable Trotters. Once you've completed the main quest and the corresponding fountains, you'll be able to talk to any Great Fairy in order to unlock the menu for upgrading armor.
The amount of material needed to upgrade each piece of armor is different. You'll require anything from three Red Chuchu jellies and 10 Rupees to upgrade your first armor piece, and anywhere between five Rubies or 10 Fire-Breath Lizalfos Horns to upgrade each subsequent one. For example the Champion Leathers can be upgraded to +5 defense, which allows you to keep up with a good-sized group of enemies in the majority of cold environments and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded up to +20 defense, giving you enough protection to survive an entire raid with a handful of friends.
You can't upgrade your armor in the same way as weapons. If you're playing as a Warrior, you should focus on upgrading your armor for physical strength or the power of spells. Potions

The upgrade vendors can be found in major cities and in the capital of each zone, as well as in in dungeons. Upgrades for trinkets can be bought with tokens, gold or fragments of a rare trinket.
